Winter trends are in full bloom, from tactile textures, ladylike prints, and a fair share of sparkle, ’tis the season to layer up your look with fashion’s finest. Just last week, with the help of my trusty fashion guru, Elizabeth Tuke, I chatted with Savannah on The Today Show about the season’s trends that have me feeling chic and styled. We tend to associate shearling with a rugged man’s leather jacket (think WWII flight jackets). If you can’t dig one of these classics out of your father’s closet, we are seeing this cozy, plush lining in a range of silhouettes this season, and not just as an inner lining! Faux shearling is generally thicker, warmer and softer than other synthetic furs, which is key in this frigid weather.
This faux suede + shearling jacket is a definite nod to “your dad’s old bomber jacket” but is much more feminine, less engulfing, and very fashion forward. In the Today Show segment we paired it with a fairly casual look – a chunky fisherman turtleneck and flared jean, and then funk’d it up with a red velvet bootie – incorporating the 70’s- inspired trends we continue to see. You should have fun with these different textures! Shearling isn’t just for your flight crew, velvet isn’t just for a holiday dress.
Winter florals are always a favorite and a great way for the monochromatic and all-black lovers to experiment with subtle patterns. They are also safer to wear professionally as the prints tend to be much more melancholy than the bright floral prints we see in spring and summer seasons.
This winter, we are seeing edgy, lush winter blooms with black- and navy-based backgrounds. This navy-based floral cocktail dress is ornate and elegant and can be an alternative to your LBD. Textured or printed tights are also considerably popular this season; swap out your black stockings for a lace-inspired or polka dot textured tight. Again, treat them as you would a typical black tight, as the dress pattern is not loud enough to clash with another texture or pattern. Pair with a tailored jacket and classic pumps to complete the chic ensemble!
For those less likely to stick to an all-black ensemble, high-shine and luxe embellishments are a must. Metallics, gold/silver lamé and sequins covered the Louis Vuitton, Zac Posen and Proenza Schouler runways. Perhaps it was the Star Wars or disco fever. This shimmering trend can be subtly peppered into a casual look, or completed with a head-to-toe evening/cocktail look.
Morgan, who modeled this look for the Today Show segment, wore a little of everything: a black/gold sequin pencil skirt paired with a top featuring the embellishment de resistance: rivets. This rivet-embellished top is simply an elevated black top. Combined with the skirt, the overall look will give you a modern take on this trend with just the right amount of sequins and shine without looking like an actual disco ball.
We saw a lot of pajama dressing last season. This season it is all about covering yourself in cozy knits. Comfort is key, but keeping it feminine and polished is also important.
This sweater skirt is the best way to achieve the slouchy, comfy look while remaining fashion forward, chic and put together! Pair it with an equally cozy sweater, pom-pom hat, and flat (on Today we used sneakers to really drive the message) for an off-duty, elevated weekend look.
